If you’re visiting Cape Town and are seeking relaxed, down-to-earth, tranquil accommodation that’s close to the city (but equally close to beaches and best restaurants), we have just the thing: Ashby Manor. A beautiful Victorian house on the hills of Fresnaye, the manor has been recently revamped and sports rooms stylishly decorated, a winding wooden staircase and walls hung with painting after mirror after painting. It’s a home away from home, and the welcoming staff and equally welcoming rooms (oh, the bed), you’ll find yourself wishing you could stay forever.
The eclectic communal space is in contrast to the all-white room we shared. With views of Signal Hill from the one side, and the Atlantic Ocean and beach front from the other, you are spoilt with light that spews in from all angles and breathtaking views to wake up to.
We enjoyed sundowners on the top deck, a shared space with other guests, and breakfast in the large dining room. The attention to detail is easily noted, from the staff who prepare your bed for the night’s rest (with complimentary sugary treats), the classy chandeliers and modern light fittings that complement the older space, and the pops of colour found in the cushions and carpets. Antique furniture, creaking wooden floors and pressed ceilings make the space burst with character and charm.
We took a R40 Uber to town for dinner, notifying how close it is, but felt as if we’d left the city entirely. It has a ‘whisked away’ allure, that makes you feel like you’ve spent a weekend out of town. For a weekend retreat, or for friends visiting the Cape and need somewhere worthwhile to stay, we can’t recommend Ashby Manor enough. In fact, we really want to go back.
