Glen Carlou is one of South Africa’s leading wine producers, and with a beautifully spacious and modern tasting room and restaurant, it’s a noteworthy space to visit in the Paarl Winelands. Under the ownership and management of the Hess Family, the staff at Glen Carlou continue to produce wines of exceptional quality and consistency, growing from strength to strength.
Restaurant @ Glen Carlou offers innovative dishes inspired by the seasons. Under the directorship of Chef Johan Stander, one can enjoy lunch in the restaurant or on the shaded terrace whilst taking in the beautiful landscape and vineyard views.
We were honoured to enjoy a selection of the restaurant’s Winter Plates, a menu meticulously created by Stander and paired with wines curated by Winemaker Arco Laarman. It was an afternoon spent savouring five prized courses among excellent foodie friends.
The day’s menu went as follows. As you can imagine, we left in a food coma…
Springbok terrine, wild mushroom puree, kumquats, malay dressing
Gruyere and cauliflower soufflé, spinach crème, mint, coriander, walnuts
2014 Glen Carlou Chardonnay
Masala roasted sea bass, spinach and dhal lentils, pickled fennel cucumber and carrot
Salad, cardamon, saffron and coconut crème
2013 Quartz Stone Chardonnay
Whole grain mustard glazed ostrich fillet, biltong croquette, bordelaise
Cape brandy pudding, pistachio crumble, buttermilk gel, brandy jelly, iced coffee ice
Boeber, guava mousse, guava sorbet, Welder poached guava
2013 The Welder, Natural Sweet Chenin Blanc
The fresh produce, interesting choice of ingredients and excellent wine pairings were testament to the qualities that Glen Carlou so proudly evoke. You will leave warm, full and fuzzy – and definitely not disappointed.
