Le Venue at The House of J.C Le Roux

It was an overcast day in Cape Town. As we entered the beautiful gates of J.C Le Roux and I had all my preconceived notions in tact: this wine is too sweet and is largely enjoyed (in ample quantities) by people who know nothing about wine. Although in some instances that may be true, I was proven wrong, and along with Bernard had an incredible wining and dining experience at Le Venue, at The House of J.C Le Roux.

Dating back to 1983 when its first ever bottle of Sauvignon Blanc was made, The House of J.C. Le Roux has dedicated itself to the art of creating delicious sparkling wines. In the picturesque Devon Valley near Stellenbosch, the estate has become renowned for its Méthode Cap Classiques (MCC), and sparkling wines.

In observance to the time-honoured French tradition of bottle fermentation, it’s every bubbly fan’s dream (aka me) to visit an estate solely known for its bubblies, and with a variety of MCCs to choose from – the sweet to the not sweet at all – we enjoyed a tasting in the tasting room before moving upstairs to luncheon at Le Venue.

Open for breakfast and lunch, the beautiful setting and light, airy decor offers a fine taste of le good life with an inviting al fresco deck and gourmet braai area. Boasting glamour and style, Le Venue is the ultimate hot spot for guests looking to spend a summery (or wintry) day in the vineyards.

The chilly morning dictated our menu choice: pork belly atop a mound of buttery mashed potato, and ox tail paired with tagliatelle and julienne vegetables. This paired with a delicious bottle of vintage Pinot Noir/Chardonnay MCC and we had perfection.

Oysters and MCC might just be the best food on the planet – and take pride of place on the new lunch menu. The options vary in portion size, from smaller dishes for the not-so-hungry to bigger portions (and the breakfast menu offers the ultimate in indulgence for when you want to start your day with a glass of J.C. Le Roux). The relaxed ambience, friendly and knowledgeable staff and excellent tasting menu in the tasting room downstairs make for an excellent vineyard outing – and you, like us, can choose the unsweetened option too.
