When we visited The Taproom at Devil’s Peak Brewery in Salt River, we fittingly went with friends who know all there is to know about beer. It was Tuesday night, and we were ready for the Tuesday special: cheeseburger and fries with a 350 ml draught of First Light for R50.
We went on a chilly, wet Capetonian winter’s day. Despite the condensation on the large windows and Devil’s Peak hidden by clouds, it didn’t seem to dampen anyone’s spirits. In fact, it was rather romantic and characterful.
Ravenous, we threw all carb caution to the wind and tried the chilli poppers – delicious. Crispy, perfectly cooked and with enough bite to get your tastebuds working, they were just the right spicy start (R45).
The #TuesdayTaproom special runs from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm weekly, and is brilliant value for money; the burgers are exceptional, and washed bag with the coldest of cold draught it’s all you need on a dreary Tuesday. You can however order from the varied menu if burgers aren’t your thing, and if you’re extra thirsty, follow up the First Light with something a little more meaty. Beer tastings and food pairings are available to the more curious – a great way to see, taste and experience what this craft beer brewery is doing.
Relaxed, tastefully decorated with a modern urban feel, The Taproom is the perfect spot to visit with friends. The Woodstock and Salt River areas are seeing a slow gentrification, and places like Devil’s Peak Brewery are helping to bring more people to that side of the mountain. Whether it be for a business meeting during the day, or draught or two after work to quiet the working nerves, The Taproom is a stylish and comfortable spot to call home. I think it’ll become our usual.
